Small deposits in
retina may be early
precursor to changes
that will impact
macular area
Central macula begins to show
some swelling, resulting in
reduced, distorted central vision.
Breakdown in retinal tissue
centrally results in fluids
into area and displacement
of macular cells and
blurred vision centrally
Hemorrhage begins
to expand beyond
central macular area
Expanding
central
bleeding
Scarring of macula and
loss of central vision
after resolution of
hemorrhage
Heavy central
macular hemorrhage
Exudative fluid formation
As fluids and hemorrhage leak into the
macular area, cells are displaced and
then die.  Central vision is initially
distorted and then lost.

New techniques of treatment involve
efforts to prevent the development of
these hemorrhages.
Central macula is
clear and unaffected
