Macular degeneration is the breakdown of retinal tissue and
loss of receptor cells in the central vision area. This process
may involve "dry" or hemorrhagic "wet" tissue changes.

The primary cause of this degenerative process seems to be
age related, although some genetic and environmental
triggers may also be involved.

Current treatment of wet macular degeneration involves the
use of medications to try to prevent further blood vessel
leakage and the formation of new, less healthy blood
vessels.  Antioxidant vitamin supplements may also retard
further development of vision loss.
